After sugarcane is pressed to remove its sugar, its parenchyma cells form hollow, porous fibres. These fibres are processed into a natural sugarcane-based material with excellent oil-absorption and deodorising properties. Without requiring chemical modification, the hollow fibres provide strong adsorption through capillary action. Their capacity to adsorb 2-nonenal is equivalent to 70% of that of activated carbon, while their oil-absorption capacity is seven times that of kaolin. The material is safe for human use. It is oleophilic, readily forms aggregates and does not adhere easily, allowing it to be removed after absorbing oil. It can be used in dry shampoos, environmental cleaning products, deodorising pet bedding, fragrance adsorbents and oil-absorbing facial masks. more
