Formaldehyde-free Biomass Adhesives

1/

Formaldehyde is classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Group 1 carcinogen and is highly toxic and irritating. Under Taiwan’s Indoor Air Quality Standards, indoor formaldehyde concentrations must not exceed 0.08 ppm. Formaldehyde contained in interior furnishings and furniture may take between three to fifteen years and above to be fully released. Developing formaldehyde-free bonding materials has therefore become an important trend in the wood and bamboo industries. The principal component of this formaldehyde-free bio-based adhesive consists of 30–35% modified natural cellulose and 65–70% water. The cellulose is obtained from agricultural waste that does not compete with food production. After being combined with auxiliary ingredients, the adhesive can be used in both cold-pressing and hot-pressing processes. The recommended hot-pressing temperature is 80–140°C. Applications include plywood, laminated bamboo panels, particleboard, glued-laminated timber, bentwood, fire-resistant panels and food-contact-grade materials. Compared with conventional formaldehyde-based adhesives, this product offers the following advantages: SGS certification confirming zero formaldehyde emissions. Cleaning with room-temperature water, reducing energy consumption during production. A shelf life of up to nine months, with the prepared adhesive to be used within approximately one month. The product complies with the CNS 1349 Type 1 water-resistance standard and has obtained patents in Taiwan, the United States, the European Union, Japan and China. It has also obtained USDA Certified Biobased Product certification and DIN CERTCO bio-based certification. more
