Makino Bamboo Powder

1/

Makino bamboo is one of the principal bamboo species used by Taiwan’s bamboo industry, with the main production areas extending from Taoyuan to Hsinchu. The front section of the bamboo has the highest-value application and is used exclusively to produce shinai, or bamboo swords. Shinai made from Taiwanese Makino bamboo account for 30% of the Japanese shinai market. However, owing to strict quality and handling requirements, shinai production generates at least 20–30 tonnes of bamboo waste each month. Fine particles from this waste can be converted into compost or fuel briquettes. The waste can also be ground into bamboo powder and compounded with petroleum-derived raw materials to produce composite masterbatch. The bamboo-powder content can range from 20% to 50%, reducing plastic use while maintaining the material’s physical properties. Applications include bathroom hooks and hand-tool grips. more
