Air-pollution prevention processes at Taiwan’s thermal power plants generate more than 200,000 metric tonnes of desulphurisation gypsum each year. This by-product is baked at a high temperature to reduce its moisture content to 5% and remove impurities. It is then mixed with water, a moisture-resistant agent and other ingredients before being cast in moulds and baked at a controlled temperature to produce gypsum bricks. The evenly distributed microscopic pores within the bricks provide the following properties: Lightweight: 80 kg/m², approximately one-third the weight of ordinary red bricks. Sound insulation: 45 dB or higher. Compressive strength: 120 kg/cm², capable of withstanding a level 7 earthquake. In terms of fire resistance, the bricks comply with the Ministry of the Interior’s three-hour fire-resistance test standard. After a building is demolished, the gypsum bricks can be crushed and recycled to produce new gypsum bricks or used as a cement additive, enabling the material to be reused.more
