Polyols are important raw materials used in the synthesis of polyurethane (PU). Based on their chemical structure, they can be divided into two main categories: polyether polyols and polyester polyols. Polyester polyols offer better heat resistance and mechanical strength and are commonly used in high-strength materials such as thermoplastic polyurethane and cast polyurethane (TPU/CPU). Polyether polyols offer good elasticity and resistance to hydrolysis, making them suitable for flexible foam products such as mattresses and sofas. Most commercially available PU materials are thermosetting and difficult to recycle, while recyclable TPU still accounts for less than 5%. These recovered polyols are produced from discarded PU synthetic leather containing PET polyester fibres. Chemical depolymerisation is used to break down the PU chains and recover the polyols. By adjusting the proportions of the raw materials, the recovered polyols can be used to produce rigid or flexible foams. They are currently used in the production of recycled synthetic leather at a proportion of up to 30%.more
