This material consists of 20% Makino bamboo powder and 80% recycled acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (rABS). The bamboo powder is derived from Makino bamboo sourced from Zhushan, Nantou, Taiwan. The 1980s marked the golden age of Taiwan’s bamboo industry. Bamboo shoots and bamboo products generated up to US$117 million in foreign-exchange earnings. At its peak, Taiwan had more than 2,000 bamboo-product factories, approximately 60% of which were located in Zhushan Township. Zhushan accounted for 28.6% of Taiwan’s annual raw-bamboo production, the highest proportion nationwide, and more than 70% of its population depended on the bamboo industry for their livelihoods. Makino bamboo can be used almost in its entirety. The front section can be made into bamboo swords; the middle section can be used for banana-plant supports, bamboo skewers, chopsticks, building materials and bamboo crafts; and the thinner end section can be used for bamboo-tube rice and agricultural trellises. Bamboo particles generated during processing can also be converted into compost or fuel briquettes. Ground bamboo powder can be compounded with petroleum-derived materials to produce composite pellets. The bamboo-powder content can range from 20% to 50%, reducing plastic use while maintaining the material’s physical properties. Applications include bathroom hooks and hand-tool grips.more
