Polylactic acid (PLA) is a thermoplastic polyester produced by polymerising lactic acid derived from renewable resources such as corn or sugarcane. Its physical properties include high transparency, good rigidity and good formability. It is suitable for processing methods such as injection moulding, extrusion and thermoforming. PLA has a degree of biodegradability and can decompose into water and carbon dioxide under specific industrial composting conditions. Common applications include disposable packaging, containers, fibre products and medical products, such as absorbable sutures and drug carriers. Its material properties can be modified through polymer blending and crystallisation to improve its heat resistance and mechanical strength. more
